Bacteria of the species Salmonella enterica are Gram-negative, flagellated bacteria, that are non-spore forming and facultatively anaerobic. In total, 2,500~ Salmonella enterica serovars are currently identified. Contained within these, are over 500 serovars which have been shown to be pathogenic to humas. Of these, the two most common Salmonella serovars are S. enterica Serovar Enteritidis and Enterica Serovar Typhimurium (non-typhoidal). Non-typhoidal salmonella commonly cause gastroenterides ("salmonellosis") in humans, which in humans, is widespread worldwide and manifests itself as sudden onset diarrhoea, head and stomach ache, malaise and sometimes vomiting.
Salmonella are highly adapted for reproduction in humans and animals (mammals, reptiles, birds and insects). Farm animals and animal foods produced from them (such as eggs and meat) are a common source of infection. However, it has been shown that transmisison from human-to-human is also possible, especially in the context of nosocomial infections or under poor hygenic conditions.
In Germany, 16, 318 total Salmonella diseases were reported to the RKI in accordance with the IfSG in 2017. The worldwide incidence annually of typhus abdominalis was estimated to be ~22million illnesses and ~200,000 deaths. Furthermore, in Germany there were a total of 86 typhus reported to the RKI in 2017. Regarding paratyphoid fever, there were ~5.5million cases, with 52 cases reported of paratyphoid fever in Germany in 2017.
